What you can expect before and after your skin operation

Before your procedure Dr Smith will discuss with you several techniques which could be used for treating your skin lesion. The success rate of each will be highlighted in the context of its complexity. Aftercare will also be discussed as well as any potential complications and how to minimise the risk of these.

Once the procedure has been carried out Dr Smith will review you to assess and discuss the result. He will also advise on measures to prevent the development of new lesions.

A short before and after guide – some do’s and dont’s!

Before

Do tell Dr Smith about all of your medication and any allergies

Do have breakfast and take your tablets as per normal on the day of the procedure

Do arrange for somebody to drive you home if more than a biopsy is planned

After

Do take paracetamol for any discomfort

Do plan to rest quietly for the rest of the day

Do expect some slight bleeding into the dressing over the first few hours. Minimise this by avoiding exercise, bending, straining or lifting heavy objects.

Do control any persistent bleeding by resting and then pressing on the wound with a pack of frozen peas for 20 minutes.

Do expect some bruising near the wound and swelling of the surrounding area – this should settle over 2 to 3 days.

Do expect the wound to become less troublesome over the first 3 days. If this is not the case contact Dr Smith.

Do expect time to change the appearance of your scar, skin graft or skin flap.
